Murder in Derry: Currynierin '˜in shock' over killing

The Currynierin community was this morning trying to come to terms with the news that a young man has been murdered, local representatives have said.

Commenting on the death of the 24-year-old following an incident at Milldale Crescent, Waterside Councillor Christopher Jackson said:

“There is shock in the community on hearing this news.

“My thoughts and prayers are with this young man’s family at this time and I would appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward to the PSNI.”

Foyle MLA SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan also commented on the tragedy this morning, posting on social media: “Horrific news that a young man has been murdered in Derry.

“Thoughts and prayers with his family at this awful, traumatic time.”

The PSNI meanwhile have also described the young man’s death as “tragic”.

The murder victim was discovered after police were called to Milldale Crescent in the Currynierin area last night (Saturday).

He was taken from the scene to hospital but has since passed away.

A 16-year-old youth has been arrested following the murder.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Just after 10.25pm, police received a report that a man had been assaulted in the Milldale Crescent area during an altercation. “The man was taken to hospital where he later died.

“Another 24-year-old man also received injuries to his head in the incident but these are not believed to be life threatening.”

Detective Chief Inspector Michael Harvey said: “A 16 year old male was arrested shortly after midnight on Sunday 22 May and is currently assisting us with our enquiries at Strand Road Police Station.

“This has resulted in the tragic death of a young man, therefore I would ask anyone in the community who knows anything about the circumstances leading up to this incident, or saw or heard an altercation in the Milldale Crescent area, to contact police and give us this information.

“Please contact detectives at our Incident Room at Maydown Police Station on 028 7137 9793 or alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
