Parents have been urged to make sure their children have a bike helmet and light fitted for their following a number of near misses across Derry.

The warning was issued by Sinn Fein Derry City Councillor Colly Kelly.

Colr. Kelly said there had been a number of reports of children riding bikes with no lights along a number of busy roads in the city.

He said: “I was contacted by several constituents who have told me about a number of incidents at night time in recent weeks when they were driving along the Lone Moor Road and Foyle Road they had a couple near misses when children on bikes with no lights just appeared in front of them.

“The children on the bikes had no helmets and for the drivers of the cars more worrying they there was no lights on the bikes so the drivers only seen them by luck at the very last minute.”

He added: “I would make an urgent appeal before anyone lets a child out on a bicycle that they get them a helmet and get a working light on the bike.

“And if possible wear light coloured or reflective clothing during the day and reflective clothing and/or accessories in the dark.

“If this appeal stops one child from being hurt or seriously injured then it is worth it.”
