A new Continence Care link nurse in the community took up her post at Fahan Health Centre yesterday,

Michelle Quinn, is one of four nurses doing the nurse-led care clinics in Donegal, headed by the Continence Care Service based in Dungloe Community Hospital.

The new role was created to improve the quality of life for people who are affected by bladder and/or bowel problems by providing a specialist service. Clients will be seen in their local community at nurse led ‘Healthy Bladder and Bowel Clinics’ where an assessment of their problem will be completed and a treatment plan given. If required, clients may then be referred on to either the Physiotherapy Service or the Uro-Gynaecology Service at Letterkenny General Hospital. The role also includes raising awareness of continence problems, of the supports that are available and providing education sessions to healthcare staff, carers and voluntary groups. Michelle has worked in Buncrana Community Hospital as a staff nurse and was also the Continence Care Link Nurse. She commenced a nurse led Continence Clinic in Buncrana in 2010. Patients can self refer to the Continence Care Service by calling 074 9521343 or 087 1219347 or e-mail frances.mcginley@hse.ie.
