Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Campbell says plans for a new park at Inveroe Gardens in Creggan would “completely transform” the area.
Funding for the proposed park will be discussed at the monthly meeting of Derry City Council’s environmental services committee on Thursday.
The Department of Social Development has already pledged £360,000 for the project and councillors will discuss whether to approve an application for £30,000 from Council.
Colr. Campbell said it is a “golden opportunity” to redevelop the site, which has been used as a dumping ground and an area for bonfires in the past. “This is something the Triax neighbourhood management team have been working on for three years and I am delighted that it is nearing completion.
“There have been a number of problems at this site in the past and this will really turn a negative into a positive,” he said. “£360,00 has already been committed to this project and if Council gives the green light to the additional £30,000 it would completely transform this area,” he added.
