Derry’s Christmas Market is to be moved away from Guildhall Square to a new site this winter.

The market will be relocated across the river to Ebrington Square, Derry City Council have confirmed.

A festive ‘yurt’ bar, ice rink and vintage fun fair will be among the features returning to the city as part of the market.

The Journal earlier this year revealed that the market will run for an expanded four weeks from Friday, November 28th to Sunday, December 21st this year.

In July the council said it was examining options for location when asked if it would remain at its usual home in Guildhall Square.

The relocation has now been confirmed in the business opportunities section of the council’s website, with this year’s event going under the name of ‘Foyle Festive Fayre’.

The council have stated that the fayre “will see Ebrington transformed into an idyllic winter wonderland with activities for old and young alike”.

It also states: “The ice rink will return and will also bring a vintage fun fair which will capture the Christmas enchantment we are aiming for.

“Our proposal to build on this existing infrastructure will see us establish a festive market with purpose built wooden chalets adorned in tasteful seasonal decor, a festive bar serving the best of craft wines and beers in the warm surrounds of a yurt style enclosure, a kids activity area such as a petting zoo or arts & crafts area and of course, in keeping with the city title for 2014, a music stage.

“The Fayre will run from 28th November to 21st December and trading will take place from 12noon to 10pm daily.”

The council has now put a call out to traders who wish to be part of the event, stating: “This is your chance to be part of a vibrate mix of traders to create a ‘Festive Ambience’ and to enhance the shopping experience of visitors to the city.

“In the lead up to Christmas, primarily, traders who sell specialist food and non-food goods, not normally associated with conventional town offer are invited to apply to trade at this year Foyle Festive Fayre.

Those interested have until 12pm on 7th November to get in apply. Further details are available on: http://www.derrycity.gov.uk/BusinessOpportunities/ChristmasMarket.
