Sinn Fein Westminster candidate for Foyle, Gearóid Ó hEára, officially opened the newly refurbished Sinn Fein advice centre in Shantallow on Thursday.

Mr. Ó hEára addressed a crowd of about 100 people and spoke passionately and fondly about how Sinn Fein has had a physical presence in the area for 40 years.

“It all started off with a small caravan in 1975 and I suppose the thing that was so remarkable was that the people of this area started coming to the caravan to ask republicans to represent them.

“It gives me great pleasure and it’s a great honour to open this new office today because I think it shows that no matter what the British ever threw at us, we endured and grew stronger.”

Mr. Ó hEára made a point of remember volunteers who had died within the last 40 years and urged all those involved with the party in Shantallow to take the party to the next level.

“I remember when this area had one Sinn Fein councillor and the SDLP had four. We are now the dominant party in this area as well as in the new super council.

“I think the story of this centre proves that our struggle is and has worked.

“I look around at this new centre and I can’t help but be impressed but the next step in our struggle is to professionalise and provide the people of this area with the best representation we can,” he said.”
