A new road map for social work must be backed up by proper funding if it is to yield benefits, says the SDLP’s Health spokesman Mark H Durkan.
Speaking after Health Minister Edwin Poots yesterday launched a new social work strategy for Northern Ireland, Mr Durkan said the plan would not have significant impact if not properly resourced.
The Foyle MLA said said the review was “timely”, adding that it would be welcomed by “long-suffering” social workers.
However, he added: “The review must do more than pay lip service to the problems facing social workers and speculate as to how the Department can enhance their role.
“It must demonstrate practical support for the profession so that our social workers do not become demoralised as they carry out the essential work that they do. Unless the platitudes are backed up with resources this will be a missed opportunity to improve an integral cog in the smooth running of our society and a vital part of many people’s lives.”
