NI Opera’s New Year performance in Derry will be Humperdinck’s classic opera, Hansel and Gretel, which runs at the Millennium Forum next Thursday, January 12.

This production brings a cast of top quality Irish and Northern Irish singers alongside singing legend Graham Clark, who has performed at the Met, Bayreuth, and the Royal Opera House.

Leading singers include local singers, Niamh Kelly, who sings Hansel, and Doreen Curran, who is the Mother. This opera will delight audiences, young and old, with its compelling Grimm’s Brothers fairy-tale narrative.

NI Opera was launched in October 2010. Since its launch, NI Opera have staged performances throughout Northern Ireland with highly acclaimed performances of Tosca and Orpheus in the Underworld.

Tosca was performed site-specific in Derry in April, with each act held in a different location, creating a unique setting. It thrilled audiences, who were ‘part’ of the opera, moving between acts, together with cast and orchestra, along the moonlit ancient walls.

The young audiences at performances of Hansel and Gretel in the Grand Opera House last month were enthralled.

Targeting the younger members of the audience is a key priority for Oliver Mears, NI Opera’s Artistic Director.

Speaking recently to Culture NI, he said, ‘With every production we try to aim for an experience that will really engage the audience, we want the kids who see this production to have a more positive view of opera.’
