Northland Sinn Féin councillor Mickey Cooper has welcomed news that Derry City Council have asked the Housing Executive to transfer ownership of a green space at Nixon’s Corner to allow the development of a play area.
Colr. Cooper said local residents have been calling for more play provision in the area.
“I am pleased that my request for the transfer of land at Nixon’s Corner is being speedily processed,” he said.
The Sinn Féin colr. said he hoped plans for a play area can now be drawn up. “Once council have ownership of the land we can start the process of developing appropriate designs for the green space so it can hopefully be developed as a play area for local children who at the moment have no play facilities whatsoever,” he explained.
The colr. also said he intends to carry out further consultation with local residents in order to find out what they want on the site.
“I will be consulting with local residents on any proposed designs to ensure they meet the needs of the young people in the area before we apply for planning permission. And hopefully funding to ensure the facilities are developed in due course,” he said.
