‘No excuse not to carry donor card’, says Anne Brolly

The mother of kidney donor Joe Brolly has made an impassioned plea to everyone to carry a donor card.

The Dungiven man, a barrister and former Derry GAA star who writes a column for the ‘Derry Journal’, made the incredible sacrifice of donating his kidney to his friend,Shane Finnegan last week. The operation was carried out last in Guy’s Hospital in London, where they are both recovering.

Joe’s mum, Anne, who travelled to London on Wednesday with her husband Francie to see her son, said there is “no excuse not carry a donor card”.

“I want to thank everyone for their support for Joe and Shane,” she said, “and the best way people can acknowledge what Joe did is to carry a donor card.”

The Sinn Fein councillor told a meeting of Limavady council on Tuesday her son had told her when he was in hospital a young man came in who had received an organ from a 100-year-old man.

“There is no excuse when you hear that, no matter what age you are,” she said.

Limavady Mayor Cathal McLaughlin told members it was important Council recognised Joe Brolly’s “act of bravery”, which he said was a welcome “good news story”.

Mayor McLaughlin passed on his good wishes to Joe Brolly and told Colr. Brolly: “To a friend and colleague, you should be extremely proud of your son.”
