SDLP candidate for the Moor area in Derry, Emmet Doyle has said there is no place in the city for hate crime or prejudice.

Mr Doyle made the comments after police confirmed that they are treating an attack on a car in the Fountain area of the city as a hate crime.

He said: “Derry has undergone a huge transformation since the darkest days of our conflict. We live in a vibrant, open and welcoming city where everyone can expect to be treated with respect. Even in the last year, as city of culture, we have displayed and explored the rich diversity that exists here.

“Those who attack others based on their own prejudices offer nothing other than misery and heartache. Their narrow-mindedness leaves them stuck in a past that the rest of us have long left behind. My thoughts this evening are with those who were the victims of this attack. It is extremely distressing to be targeted in this cruel and callous way.

“I’m pleased that the police have already made several arrests in relation to the attack and would appeal to anyone who may have any further information to come forward.”
