An Inishowen conservation group has issued an “urgent appeal” to communities across Inishowen to register their objections to a prospecting proposal for the peninsula.
It was recently confirmed that the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources’ had decided to grant licenses Connemara Mining Company Ltd to prospect for the mining of gold and other minerals in townlands across the peninsula.
Local group Celebrate Water said the “social and economic well-being” of the peninsula’s communities were built on its “natural environment, farming, fishing and natural and anthropological heritage.”
They added: “It is the view of Celebrate Water that the decision by the Minister to grant these licenses poses a real threat to all of these cornerstones and thus to the well-being of the whole peninsula.”
They stated that to register objection now ensures right of objection should the issue ever go to planning appeal.
They added: “To even consider inviting an industry that would be the death knell for such a potentially ecologically viable and sustainable initiative as the €8 million-funded Wild Atlantic Way presents, beggars belief.”
They urged people to “come from a place of personal and community sovereignty.”
Details of how to do register your objection, which is free of charge, can be found on the Celebrate Water facebook. The closing date for registering is 16th February.
