North West feels '˜the Force' of Star Wars

Scores of lorries and vehicles were seen arriving in Malin Head in recent days with even more arriving yesterday.

Tourists, Star Wars fans and more than a few locals have also been flocking to the area to see if they can catch a glimpse of the set, although security has been tight.

TV crews and national media have also been in the area and are expected to remain so this weekend.

Road closures in Malin Head began at 8.00 am this morning and will continue until Sunday. While Donegal County Council is still stating the closures are for “works” at Malin Head, local sources say cast members from Star Wars Episode VIII will be on set this weekend while ‘location shots’ were filmed yesterday.

While the roads will be closed and there is also a sea and air exclusion zone in place, however, anyone intending to visit Malin Head this weekend will be able to access the local businesses such as pubs and restaurants.

While there is already a ‘lot of activity’ in Malin Head, this is expected to increase from today onwards and Jim Mullin of the Malin Head Community Association is delighted, telling the ‘Journal’ how “you could not buy this type of publicity.”

Mr Mullin said Inishowen’s links to the multi-million dollar movie will not only provide a huge economic boost to the peninsula, Derry and Donegal over the next few days, but will also have long-term benefits into the future. Ali Farren, of Ardmalin Caravan park, said it has been “just traffic, traffic, traffic” all week, and yesterday in particular, which was “non-stop.” Anyone visiting the area this weekend is asked to be mindful of any restrictions in place and of private land and safety.
