Torrential rain caused flooding across Derry and the North West on Friday evening.

DRD Roads Service staff distributed sandbags to residents in the Lecky Road and Letterkenny Road areas of the city to prevent flood water entering their homes.

In Donegal, the emergency department of Letterkenny General Hospital had to be closed after a stream at the rear of the hospital burst its banks, sending flood water gushing into a number of wards.

Patients were diverted to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry and the hospital was closed to visitors for a period while the clean up operation got underway.

Homes in the Greencastle area of Inishowen were also without power for a number of hours on Friday evening after the thunderstorms disrupted electricity supplies.

Forecasters have warned that more rain could be on the way over the next 48 hours but have said it is not likely to be as intense as it was on Friday night. “The risk will remain as we go into Sunday and Derry, Donegal and the west of Ulster could see some downpours,” a Met Éireann spokesperson said.
