NWRC sets local man on track to success

There aren’t many people who look forward to starting work every morning, but local man Pearce Lafferty says he certainly does.

Former North West Regional College (NWRC) sports student Pearce is loving life at the minute. As Derry City Football Club’s Strength & Conditioning coach, Pearce is fulfilling a lifetime ambition to work in full-time football.

“I always wanted a career in sport and can remember from an early age doing everything that I possibly could in order to help me achieve that. I took park in every sport going, from soccer to GAA, volleyball to table tennis. I was sport mad! I was also interested in the science of sport, and nutrition and preparation became a passion for me, as much to help my own performance as anything else.

Pearce completed the National Diploma in Sport with NWRC before progressing to a Degree with Loughborough University, and then a Masters in Strength & Conditioning at Middlesex University.

“I loved my time at North West Regional College, the lecturers were brilliant and were so knowledgeable about their subjects. It’s a relaxed place to study, everyone is so supportive and encouraging, and you gain so much confidence and belief to achieve. Without it I’m not sure I would be where I am today.”

“I used to do a lot of reading about sports science even when I was still in secondary school. I knew then that in order to stand out from the rest I had to gain as much knowledge and experience that I possibly could. I have spent time with Manchester City and Leicester City football clubs and I am putting that knowledge and practice into working with the guys at Derry City now.

Pearce is now a member of the coaching staff at Derry City FC, under the management of Peter Hutton, working with the first team squad both on match-days and training during the week, and also coaches in the academy with the underage teams. He is a well-respected coach and now works with athletes from a range of sporting disciplines through his own company ‘Fitness Performance Ireland’.

“The advice I would give to young people now thinking about becoming a sports coach is to push yourself and try to acquire as much knowledge as you can. In my opinion the best way to do that is to study hard but to also get as much volunteer work under your belt as possible,” he says.
