Derry’s North West Regional College (NWRC) is to be a key venue when the city hosts the All-Ireland Fleadh next year, it has been announced.
The Derry college will host the festival’s competitions throughout its August 12-18 run.
NWRC’s Principal Seamus Murphy says the college is honoured to be the competition host.
“We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as host to one of Ireland’s largest annual events, and believe it highlights our commitment to providing the local community with a centre of excellence for social and cultural opportunities.
“We are confident that our modern learning and performance facilities will provide the perfect backdrop to an exciting few days of teaching and competition, and look forward to working with our colleagues in the Fleadh organising committees in the build-up to what promises to be a truly memorable week for everyone connected with the 2013 All-Ireland Fleadh.”
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann has been running for over 60 years across Ireland and will be held for the first time in Derry City in 2013, forming part of the 2013 City of Culture celebrations.
Eibhlín Ní Dhochartaigh says the college’s facilities possessed everything they were looking for when setting out to find a suitable venue for the competitions and Scoil Éigse;
“We are delighted to announce our partnership with the North West Regional College for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2013.
“As a committee we have spent a lot of time researching venues for the Fleadh and the North West Regional College provides a perfect, state of the art, modern facility that is just five minutes’ walk from the city centre.
“Having the majority of Scoil Éigse and Fleadh competitions in one venue will make Fleadh 2013 the most convenient location in recent memory. We are confident that having facilities like this will provide the wow factor that we are looking for next year. ”
