An exciting cross community tournament aimed at bringing young adults off the streets and into the positive environment of the football pitch takes place this Saturday in Derry.
The event, hosted by Galliagh’s ‘Off the Street’ community youth initiative, is being supported by the Irish FA’s Football for All team through EU’s PEACE III funding.
Teams from community groups and youth clubs in the Galliagh and Shantallow areas will be competing alongside teams from across the city and beyond, with entrants from Newbuildings, Belfast and St Johnstone expected to attend.
Damien Coyle, Off the Street’s senior project support officer, said the event was a great opportunity to showcase football as a positive influence on males aged 16 and over who struggle with personal and social and alcohol abuse issues. “All too often these young men are seen in a negative light, either with street drinking or anti-social behaviour,” he said.
“This is a great chance for youngsters to see them as positive role models for a change,” he said.
