A Derry golfer is celebrating after achieving not one, but two holes-in-one in the same round.
Gerry Guckian - solicitor and chairman of the Western Health Trust (WHSCT) - was playing at Greencastle Golf Club on Sunday last when he achieved the amazing feat at the ninth and 11th holes.
The father-of-three was playing in a competition on the last day of the club’s open week when he hit his first record shot at the ninth hole.
He had barely recovered from the shock when, just two holes later, he shot his second hole-in-one.
The chance of hitting two aces in a single game is said to be about 64 million to one.
His playing partners on the day included bookmaker Tommy McBride, Hugh Casey, and his younger brother, Neil, the captain of the Inishowen club.
The Golfing Union of Ireland is to be contacted to see if this feat has ever been equalled on a golf course in Ireland.
Gerry, who has been playing golf since he was a child, has enjoyed three holes-in-one over the years.
But two in one round was beyond his wildest dreams.
He said: “I wasn’t playing particularly well...I first thought the ball was sitting beside the hole but, as we approached, it dropped into the hole.
“There was great excitement at that time, which was doubled when I did exactly the same two holes later,” he said.
“I did not win the competition, despite the two holes-in-one, which, perhaps, shows the quality of my golf,” he said.
The Waterside man added that his brother encouraged him to use a different ball for the 12th hole - and that he should keep the one that achieved two holes in one. Luckily, he listened to the club captain.
A spokesman for Greencastle Golf Club said “Gerry is quite the toast of the place at the moment. Hitting a hole in one is a rare thing but hitting two, and in the same round, is unheard of.”
