A Derry charity believes that there have been ‘hundreds’ of local people taking part in the internet craze ‘neknominate’ which is understood to have claimed the lives of two young men in the Republic at the weekend.

DrinkThink Derry, part of the Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum, said it was “impossible to put an exact figure on those taking part but we believe it to be in the regions of hundreds.”

The idea of ‘neknominate’ is to drink a pint of beer quickly while filming yourself, before nominating two more of your friends to do the same.

However, DrinkThink manager Joanne Smith said, “We have seen videos and heard reports of people adding bleach, tomato ketchup and tabasco sauce to their drinks, as well as mixing several types of alcohol in the one glass.

“This is very dangerous and we would urge people to stop this craze in its tracks.

“Imagine how you would feel if someone you nominated died as a consequence of drinking in this way.”

The ‘Journal’ has watched a video online in which the drinker apparently adds a bottle of beer, a glass of wine, a shot of whiskey, a shot of rum and some protein powder to a dog bowl, before drinking from it while inside the dog’s kennel.

A spokesperson for the White Oaks Treatment Centre in Muff said events in recent days had shown, once again, the ‘totally dysfunctional relationship’ we have with alcohol in this country.

He said: “We seem to think we can treat alcohol as just another liquid; we don’t see it as a mind altering drug.

“It’s a substance that can do real harm and can have devastating consequences, as has been proved this weekend.”
