Did you see Daniel O’Donnell on TV with Pat Kenny? It was over a week ago now but Daniel and Majella were interviewed by Pat in Dublin’s Mansion House for UTV.

It’s easy to mock Daniel’s style and his legions of female fans of a certain age but he came across exceptionally well, as did Majella. Many celebrities on chat shows have something false or even vacuous about them. We hear about how much they enjoy ‘working’ in wonderful shows or whatever, name dropping other celebrities who are fabulous to ‘work’ with. Daniel is different. Without self-importance or affectation, he was refreshingly straightforward. Pat Kenny didn’t duck the tricky issues.

For instance, Daniel described how, as a Catholic he struggled at first about marrying Majella who had been divorced but he soon made up his mind. Then, in the recent referendum on same-sex marriage he came out in support of a ‘yes’ vote. He made the point that it was a proposal for civil, as distinct from church provision for same-sex marriage. He didn’t see how it would disadvantage anyone while undoing a lot of hurt for some. The churches should be free to promote their views and doctrines without depending on the state to enshrine them in law. Daniel and Majella have done much good work. They’re a credit to Donegal and to Ireland.
