Congratulations to Steelstown Brian Ogs on their first victory in the Derry Senior Football Championship!

Hugh McGrath’s men created their own little bit of history last Thursday night in Banagher when they deservedly defeated Magherafelt but even amid the euphoria of victory, the progressive city club know it’s only the latest step in journey that has taken them from Junior football to Derry’s top table in less than 30 years.

The Ballyarnett men are putting city GAA back on the Derry map but it is not by accident that they have established themselves in Division One. The club is a shining example to others looking to build. Hard work and dedication, both on and off the field, have brought Steelstown to where they are are now. Numbers continue to swell at underage levels and there is quality coaching at every level but the club is benefitting from foundations laid years ago by a hard working committee.

Last season’s target was survival. They achieved that. This year they wanted a senior championship victory and hey have got one. With Ballinascreen next on the horizon, who is to say they won’t double their Championship tally?
