Chun teanga a choinneáil beo, ba chóir do dhaoine a bheith ábalta úsáid a bhaint aisti i saol an uile lae, agus nuair atá siad ag déileáil le húdaráis áitiúla agus le ranna stáit go háirithe.

Tá an eagraíocht Pobal ar thús cadhnaíochta i streachailt phobal na Gaeilge chun Acht na Gaeilge a chur chun cinn agus chun cearta bunúsacha a thabhairt do Ghaeilgeoirí. Tá sárobair déanta ag Iontaobhas Ultach ‘ar an dá thaobh den phobal’: ceapann an eagraíocht seo gur chóir an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn mar oidhreacht choiteann ag gach duine, idir Náisiúnaithe agus Aontachtaithe. A bhuí le hobair Iontaobhas Ultach, feiceann a lán Aontachtaithe anois nach bhfuil bagairt ar bith sa Ghaeilge agus tá siad ag foghlaim na teanga fiú. Tá sé thar a bheith tábhachtach tús a chur le teanga eile chomh luath agus is féidir. Feiceann duine fásta sraith fadhbanna agus é ag foghlaim teanga; ach foghlaimíonn páiste beag teanga go nádúrtha, gan smaoineamh ar ghramadach. Bunaíodh Altram i 1990 le tacaíocht a thabhairt do thionscadail luathbhlianta lán-Ghaeilge. Oibríonn Altram le caighdeán an tsoláthair maidir le foghlaim i naíscoileanna a fheabhsú. Tá an iris An tUltach ag tabhairt ardáin do scríbhneoirí Gaeilge le nócha bliain anois. Tháinig feabhas suntasach ar an iris le déanaí.Tá cuma mhaith uirthi agus tá éagsúlacht ábhair shuimiúil inti. Bunaíodh Foras na Gaeilge le tacú le heagraíochtaí Gaeilge. Ach rinne an Foras cinneadh gan na heagraíochtaí thuasluaite a mhaoiniú níos mó. Beidh gluaiseacht na Gaeilge anseo i bhfad níos laige dá bharr: seirbhísí riachtanacha atá i gceist. Tugadh an cinneadh seo i mBaile Átha Cliath: níl eagraíocht ar bith as na sé cinn a fuair maoiniú bunaithe sna Sé Chontae- deighilt nua atá ann. Ba chóir do dhuine ar bith a bhfuil suim aige i gcultúr na hÉireann ceist a chur ar na hiarrthóirí uilig roimh na toghcháin faoin scannal seo. Déanann cinneadh Fhoras na Gaeilge neamhiontas d’obair na n-eagraíochtaí tábhachtacha seo. Tá athbhreithniú de dhíth.

To keep a language alive, people should be able to use it in everyday life, especially when they are dealing with local authorities and government departments. The organisation Pobal is to the fore in the struggle of the Irish speaking community for the enacting of an Irish Language Act and to give Irish speakers fundamental rights. Iontaobhas Ultach has done outstanding work ‘on the two sides of the community’: the organisation believes that Irish should be promoted as the heritage of everyone, both Unionist and Nationalist. Thanks to the work of Iontaobhas Ultach, many Unionists now see that Irish poses a threat to nobody, and they are even learning the language. It is very important to start a second language as early as possible. An adult sees learning a language as a series of problems, but a small child learns a language naturally, without thinking about grammar. Altram was founded in 1990 to support all early years projects in Irish. Altram works to improve learning provision in Irish nurseries. For ninety years the magazine An tUltach has been providing a platform for Irish writers. The magazine has improved remarkably recently. It looks good and has interesting and varied content. Foras na Gaeilge was set up to support Irish language organisations. But Foras has decided to stop financial assistance to the above mentioned organisations. The Irish language movement here will be much worse off as a result: we are talking about essential services here. This decision was taken in Dublin: none of the organisations which received finance are based in the Six Counties- this is a new form of Partition. Anyone interested in Irish culture should be asking candidates about this scandalous state of affairs. Foras na Gaeilge’s decision ignores the work of these important organisations. This decision must be looked at again.
