Have your say

Beidh Éigse Cholm Cille ar siúl anocht ( Dé hAoine ) ar a seacht a chlog agus ag dul ar aghaidh amárach i gColáiste Mhig Aoidh.

Bunaíodh Éigse Cholm Cille i 2002 chun léamh agus scríbhneoireacht na Gaeilge a chur chun cinn agus le céiliúradh a dhéanamh ar scríbhneoiri an iarthuaiscirt .

Tá an Éigse in ann na scoláirí Gaeilge is fearr sa tír a mhealladh go Doire. Tabharfaidh Alan Titley Léacht Mhór na hÉigse anocht – cur síos gairid ar litríocht an tuaiscirt. Tá saothar ollmhór foilsithe ag Alan Titley: leabhair thagartha, úrscéalta, gearrscéalta, drámaí, filíocht, léirmheasanna agus aistí in irisí léannta agus i nuachtáin. Sílim féin go bhfuil triúr Alan Titley ann ar a laghad.

Cuirfear fáilte gheal roimh chainteoir eile, Brian Lacey, a bheidh ag caint ar Shéamas Ó Ceallaigh agus staraithe Gaeilge an iarthuaiscirt. Bhunaigh Brian Seirbhís Iarsmalainne agus Oidhreachta Dhoire. Bhí sé ag cur cultúir chun cinn i gCathair Dhoire sula raibh Cathair an Chultúir ann. Tá dhá leabhar déag scríofa aige ar stair agus ar sheandálaíocht. Thug sé cúrsa dátheangach i nDoire ar an tseandálaíocht roinnt blianta ó shin.

D’fhreastail mé féin ar an chúrsa agus bhain mé an-sult as. D’fhoghlaim mé a lán. Ach má tá ceist agat faoin tseandalaíocht, gabh chuig Brian, chan chugamsa. Rachaidh an Éigse ar aghaidh amárach le léachtaí ar Bhrian Ó Nualláin (Flann O’ Brian), a rugadh ar an Srath Bán, ar an bhéaloideasaí Seán Ó hEochaidh agus ar an bhailitheoir Énrí Ó Muirgheasa.

Tá obair na hÉigse thar a bheith luachmhar. Ní aithnítear saibhreas litríochta an iarthuaiscirt go forleathan. Tá an ceangal idir an ollscoil agus an chathair iontach tábhachtach. Is féidir le muintir na cathrach tairbhe a bhaint as scoláireacht áitiúil agus an saol acadúil a bhlaiseadh. Níl táille ar bith ar imeachtaí na hÉigse. Caithfimid lántacaíocht a thabhairt d’ócáidí mar seo go háirithe nuair atá na húdaráis ag gearradh siar ar mhaoiniú na Gaeilge.

Éigse Cholm Cille 2014 gets underway tonight (Friday)at 7 p.m. and will continue tomorrow in Magee College, Derry.

Eigse Cholm Cille was founded in 2002 to promote reading and writing in Irish and to celebrate the achievements of writers in the northwest.

Alan Titley will give the main lecture of the Éigse tonight- a brief account of literature in the north.

Alan Titley’s literary output is huge: reference books, novels, short stories, plays, poetry, reviews and essays in scholarly publications and in newspapers. Personally, I think that there are at least three Alan Titleys.

Another speaker who will receive a warm welcome is Brian Lacey, who will be speaking about Séamas Ó Ceallaigh and the historians of the northwest. Brian set up the Derry Museum and Heritage Service.

He was promoting culture in the City of Derry before there was a City of Culture. He has written twelve books on history and archaeology. He ran a bilingual archaeology course in Derry a number of years ago.

I attended the course and found it most enjoyable. I learned a lot. But if you have a question about archaeology, don’t come to me- go to Brian.

The Eigse will continue tomorrow with lectures on Brian Ó Nualláin (Flann O’Brian), who was born in Strabane, on the folklorist, Seán Ó hEochaidh and on the collector Énrí Ó Muirgheasa.

The Éigse does very valuable work. The wealth of literature in the northwest is not widely recognised.

The link between the university and the city is very important. The people in the city can profit from local scholarship and get a taste of academic life.

The Éigse is free of charge. We should support events like this especially when the powers that be are cutting back on funding for Irish.
