Celtic supporters have been somehwat underwhelmed at the signing of Leigh Griffiths from Wolves, believing the club’s current status and recent European “adventures” merited a more high profile signing.
Unfortunately for Celtic, despite their huge following and their world-wide profile, the harsh reality of economics means that possible transfer targets will opt to join Premiership and, indeed, Championship clubs, before signing for the SPL champions.
The lure of European football - which is more or less guaranteed every year - will attract some, but the overall standards of the SPL is, these days, a complete turn-off for many.
This week Parkhead boss, Neil Lennon, was wondering if his Scottish Cup conquerors, Aberdeen, would replicate their totally committed performance in their next game. After all, Aberdeen lie 21 points behind the “Celts” in the Premier League.
Of course the answer is that the lesser teams will rise to the occasion in the big games, but they cannot repeat that level of performance every week.
