Feis Dhoire

Have your say

An t-am sin arís! Glacfar le hiontrálacha ar Fheis Dhoire Cholm Cille inniu agus amárach i Halla Cholm Cille, Sráid an Úlloird, idir 10.00 agus 12.30 agus idir 2.00 agus 5.00. Beidh an Fheis féin ar siúl ón 1Aibreán go dtí an 6 Aibreán ( Seachtain na Cásca)

Bíonn a lán díospóireachta ann faoin Fheis. Bíonn daoine ag gearán faoi na comórtais rince go háirithe: costas na ngúnaí, an smideadh, na bréagfhoilt, srl. (Dála an scéil, rinne mé iarracht bréagfholt a cheannach dom féin ag deireadh na seachtaine mar gheall ar an aimsir, ach dúirt bean an tsiopa nach ndeachaigh an choirceog domsa.) Bíonn mamaithe na Feise ag clamhsán, bíonn páistí na Feise ag caoineadh, bíonn eagraithe na Feise spíonta.

Os a chomhair sin, baineann formhór na n-iomaitheoirí an-sult as an ócáid: tugtar féinmhuinín dóibh, tá deis ag daoine idir óg agus aosta a scileanna a chleachtadh, tá atmaisféar na féile ann. Maidir leis an Ghaeilge, tá níos mó ná tríocha comórtas ann, tugtar seans do dhaltaí scoile a scrúdú béil a chleachtadh agus tá deontais do chúrsaí Gaeltachta ar fáil i gcomórtais áirithe.

D’ainneoin na ngearán, caithfear a admháil go bhfuil Feis Dhoire ar na himeachtaí cultúrtha is mó sa tír seo. Tá sé ar an saol le níos mó ná 90 bliain. Cuirtear dianobair isteach san eagraíocht- agus obair dheonach atá i gceist. Tá réimse leathan d’imeachtaí: comórtais Ghaeilge, caint agus drámaíocht i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla, rince, amhránaíocht, ceol traidisiúnta agus ceol clasaiceach, tionscnaimh staire, imeachtaí aonair agus imeachtaí foirne. Cuireann sé áthas orm go bhfuil níos mó agus níos mó daoine thar lear ag dul isteach san Fheis.

Rinne Feis Dhoire cathair chultúrtha de Dhoire sula raibh Cathair an Chultúir ann. Tá ardmholadh tuillte ag lucht na Feise agus tá súil agam go bhfaighidh siad lántacaíocht ón phobal an bhliaín seo go háirithe.

The Derry Feis

That time again! Entries for Feis Dhoire Cholm Cille will be accepted today and tomorrow in St, Columb’s Hall, Orchard Street between 10.00 and 12.30, and between 2.00 and 5.00. The Feis itself will be from 1 April until 6 April (Easter Week).

The Feis is the subject of much debate. People complain about the dancing competitions in particular: the cost of the dresses, the make-up, the wigs etc. (By the way, I tried to buy a wig for myself at the weekend because of the weather, but the lady in the shop said that the beehive did not suit me.) You find Feis mammies complaining, Feis weans crying, Feis organisers exhausted.

On the other hand, most competitors really enjoy the event: they gain self confidence, young and old alike get the opportunity to practice their skills, there is a festive spirit about the place. With regard to the Irish language, there are more than 30 competitions, school pupils can practice the speaking test, and Gaeltacht scholarships can be won in certain competitions.

Despite the complaints, it has to be admitted that the Derry Feis is one of the greatest cultural events in the country. It is more than 90 years old.

The organisation involves a huge amount of work – all voluntary work. There is a wide range of events: Irish language events, speech and drama in Irish and English, dancing, singing, traditional and classical music, history projects, individual events and team events. I am delighted that more and more people from abroad are entering the Feis.

The Feis made Derry a city of culture before there was a City of Culture. Those associated with the Feis deserve the highest praise and I hope they will get the full support of the community this year especially.
