Ní neart go teacht le chéile

Have your say

Tá dul chun cinn thar cuimse déanta ag Conradh na Gaeilge i nGlaschú. Tá oifig agus oifigeach forbartha ag an Chonradh anois, agus eagraítear a lán imeachtaí i rith na bliana. Bíonn ranganna rialta in Ionad Pobail Daisy Street, Govanhill, trí lá sa tseachtain agus tá clár lán d’imeachtaí sóisialta ag Craobh an Phiarsaigh chomh maith - tráthanna na gceist, ciorcal comhrá, oícheanta ceoil srl. Tá cór ann: tá súil acu dlúthdhiosca a chur amach roimh i bhfad. Eagraítear campa samhraidh Gaeilge do dhaoine óga.

Beidh an Conradh ag ceiliúradh Lá Fhéile Bhríde ar an 26 Eanáir: déanfar crosóga, beannófar iad agus beidh céilí ina dhiaidh i Halla Chríost Rí.

Tá dlúthbhaint ag na Conraitheoirí le heagraíochtaí eile sa chathair, le Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann agus le Feis Ghlaschú go háirithe. Tá an Fheis ag dul ó neart go neart. Beidh comórtais amhránaíochta, comórtais uirlise, agus comórtais Ghaeilge in Ardscoil Naomh Pól, Pollok ar an 24 Feabhra. Tá deireadh seachtaine eile de dhíth ar na comórtais rince!

Ach níl dearcadh cúng ag an Chonradh i nGlaschú. Le blianta beaga anuas tá an nasc idir lucht na Gaeilge agus lucht na Gàidhlige ag neartú. Tá na fadhbanna céanna acu agus tá an dá ghrúpa ag foghlaim óna chéile. Is gné an-tábhachtach den chomhoibriú seo dianchúrsaí dheireadh seachtaine in An Leanag, Sráid Mansefield, Partick - lárionad Gàidhlig nua-aimseartha den scoth. Bíonn na cúrsaí seo ar siúl uair amháin gach dhá mhí a bheag nó a mhór- beidh an chéad chúrsa eile ann ar an 8 agus an 9 Feabhra, le ranganna ar leibhéil éagsúla i nGaeilge agus i nGàidhlig. Tá na táillí an-íseal! Tá baint ag a lán daoine i nDoire agus i nDún na nGall le Glaschú. Mar sin de, má tá gaol agat thall, scaip an scéal! Tuilleadh eolais: 0141 433 9495 / 07866 453 708.

Unity is strength

Conradh na Gaeilge (The Gaelic League) in Glasgow has been making outstanding progress. The League now has an office and a development officer, and a large number of events are organised throughout the year. The Pádraig Pearse Branch has regular classes in Daisy Street Neighbourhood Centre, Govanhill, three days a week, and has organised a full programme of social activities- quizzes, a conversational circle, musical evenings etc. There is a choir: they hope to produce a CD soon. An Irish language summer camp is organised for youngsters.

The League will be celebrating St. Brigid’s Day on 26 January: crosses will be made and blessed, and this will be followed by a céilí in Christ the King church hall.

The members work closely with other organisations in the city, particularly with Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and Feis Ghlaschú. The Feis is going from strength to strength. There will be singing and instrumental competitions, as well as Irish language competitions in St. Paul’s High School, Pollok, on 24 February. The dancing competitions require another weekend!

But the League in Glasgow is not insular. Ties between Irish speakers and Scottish Gaelic speakers have been strengthened in recent years. They have the same problems and both groups learn from one another. A very important aspect of this cooperation is the organisation of intensive weekend courses in An Leanag, Mansfield Street, Partick – a first rate modern Scottish Gaelic centre. These courses are held roughly once every two months- the next course will be on 8 and 9 February, with Irish and Scottish Gaelic classes catering for different levels. There is a very small fee! Many people in Derry and Donegal have Glasgow connections. So, if you have a relative over there, spread the news! Further information: 0141 433 9495 / 07866 453 708.

Nóta: Beidh na ranganna Gaeilge ag tosú arís i Halla Mhuire, Magh, Dé Máirt seo chugainn ar 5.30.

Note: Irish classes will be starting again in St. Mary’s Community Hall, Muff on Tuesday next at 5.30.
