THE reception Declan Devine and Paul Hegarty received in the Derry City Social Club last Friday night would indicate that these two appointments very much met with the fans’ approval!

Both men are very popular with Derry’s fanbase and this will probably ensure that they are given some time to put together a squad of players and put their own stamp on the team.

Both men are experienced enough to know that honeymoon periods don’t last too long in football and all that matters at the end of the day are results.

Declan has promised to keep playing the attractive football of the Stephen Kenny era and, on a personal level, I hope this remains the case.

Player recruitment will clearly be the main focus of the new management duo as we have lost some very good players.

If I can include new Sunderland star James McClean, we have lost six players from last season’s squad and our first competitive game is mid-February, therefore, time is of the essence.

There is a tremendous amount of goodwill towards Declan and Paul but they have taken on a difficult task.

I’m sure I speak for everyone connected with the club when I wish them both every good fortune for the forthcoming Airtricity League season.
