TRÓCAIRE 2011

Bíonn muintir na hÉireann báúil leis na daoine sa Tríú Domhan i gcónaí. Tuigimid dóibh. Bhí na fadhbanna céanna againne agus atá acu mar gheall ar an choilíniú. Bhí na tiarnaí talún againn fosta. Bhí bás den ghorta ann. Bhí cuid mhaith d’Éirinn cosúil leis an Tríú Domhan go dtí 60 bliain ó shin, leoga: plódtithe tuaithe gan uisce reatha, gan leictreachas; caighdeán oideachais an-íseal; seirbhísí sláinte millteanacha; córas iompair uafásach; páistí cosnochta; imirce ard srl. Tá cuid de na fadhbanna sin againn go fóill, ach ní féidir comparáid a dhéanamh le saol na ndaoine i bPoblacht Honduras i Meiriceá Láir, mar shampla. Cuireann Trócaire an spotsolas ar an tír sin agus ar phobal La Confianza go háirithe i bhFeachtas an Charghais i mbliana. Pobal feirmeoireachta atá ann ina bhfuil breis is 500 teaghlach. Tá an pobal ag troid ar son an chirt le dul i seilbh na talún ar a bhfuil cónaí orthu, ainneoin ionsaithe le foréigean a dhéanann fir úinéir na talún orthu. Ní féidir leis na daoine tithe buana a thógáil: déanann lucht slándála an tiarna talún ionsaí orthu go minic agus déantar na tithe a dhó go talamh. Ar an ábhar sin, is i bpubaill shealadacha a chónaíonn siad. Tá Trócaire agus na grúpaí atá ag obair leo ag iarraidh an talamh a fháil ar ais ón tiarna talún a thóg an talamh go héagórach uathu.

Tá pacáiste áiseanna oideachasúla i nGaeilge ar fáil ó Trócaire, Má Nuad, Co. Chill Dara (01 629 3333), nó 50 Sráid an Rí, Béal Feirste BT1 6AD (028 90 808030). Istigh sa phacáiste tá póstaeir, grianghraif ghalánta, bileoga oibre, tionscnaimh, pleananna ceachtanna srl. Tá sonraí faoi chomórtas do dhaltaí scoile ann chomh maith. Má úsáideann an múinteoir an t-ábhar seo, beidh a fhios ag na daltaí cad is carthanacht ann – agus beidh a gcuid Gaeilge ar leibhéal eile ag an deireadh chomh maith!

TRÓCAIRE 2011

The people of Ireland always show sympathy towards the people in the Third World. We understand them. We had the same problems as they have because of colonialism. We had the landlords as well. We had famine. Up until 60 years ago, indeed, a lot of Ireland was like the Third World: rural slums without running water or electricity; a very low standard of education; woeful health provision; a dreadful transport system; barefooted children; high emigration etc. We still have some of those problems, but this cannot be compared to the way people live in Honduras in Central America, for instance. Trócaire turns the spotlight on that country and on the community of La Confianza in particular in the Lenten Campaign this year. This is a farming community of over 500 families. The community are fighting for the right to own the land where they live, despite violent attacks from the land owners’ men. The people cannot build permanent homes: the landlord’s security guards frequently attack the houses and burn them to the ground. So they live in temporary tents. Trócaire and the groups that work with them are trying to get the land back from the landlord who took the land unfairly from them. An educational resource pack is available in Irish from Trócaire, Maynooth, Co. Kildare (01 629 3333) or 50 King St., Belfast BT1 6AD (028 90 808030). The pack contains posters, some marvellous photographs, worksheets, projects, lesson plans etc. There are also details of a competition for school pupils. If the teacher uses this material, the pupils will know the meaning of charity, and their Irish will be at a higher level as well when they are finished!
