Pádraig Barton Cup launch

A new underage football competition will be launched this weekend in memory of a young Derry republican who died in a car accident last year.

The Pádraig Barton Cup is named after the 18 year-old who was a member of Ógra Shinn Féin.

Brandywell Sinn Féin councillor Patricia Logue said; “The local Bogside and Brandywell monument committee felt that with this year being the 30th Anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike that they should follow the example of Bobby Sands and give something back to the younger generation of people from this area .

“For this reason they have decided to honour Pádraig by organising a new annual U14 5-a-side football competition with the help local football clubs.”
