Painting success for Moville artist

A Moville man has had one of his prized paintings chosen as the official Christmas card for the Commissioner for Older People in Northern Ireland.

Budding artist Laurence McGonagle who is a member of U3A was honoured to have his card chosen after a selection were submitted from the group.

The commissioner, Claire Keatinge, was the guest of honour at the official opening of the U3A Foyle building back in May 2012.

She was so impressed by the artistic output of the members she contacted U3A Foyle when she was looking for a picture for her first official Christmas card.

The Commissioner stated that she wanted the card to celebrate the creativity older people in Derry which is celebrating being the first ever UK City of Culture in 2013.

And Laurence’s beautiful watercolour of a family group enjoying the snow in Brooke Park in Derry was the eventual winner from over 40 submissions of paintings, drawings and photographs by members.

Laurence, a former joiner has been painting with U3A since he joined three years ago. He previously took painting classes at Serenity House and with Bridget Moore.
