Derry songwriter Paul Casey and local four-piece Future Chaser will be promoting their home town when they perform at the opening leg of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race in Southampton this weekend.
Paul Casey, best known for his distinctive vocals and innovative guitar styling, will be wooing audiences at this major sporting event that includes a boat from Derry who are participating in the race.
D:Ream star Peter Cunnah is also performing at the event.
Paul Casey, who has shared the stage with the likes of Van Morrison, Damien Rice and has recently toured with Chris Rea, is delighted to be part of the celebrations and to send off the local team on the first leg of their marathon 11 month journey across the world.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I am really proud to be part of this event. It’s a great time for Derry and the inclusion of the city as one of the destination ports for the Clipper Yacht Race is a major coup for the city as it prepares for the City of Culture in 2013.
“I am looking forward to performing at this showcase event and helping to tell the story about Derry and what it has to offer,” he said.
Niall Doherty of Future Chaser said the Derry four-piece were “surprised and delighted” to be asked to perform in Southampton as part of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
“With so many great bands on the go it is a real honour for us, and in the run up to the City of Culture we’re happy to be part of the mix,” Niall said.
Future Chaser were named ‘Best Band’ at Derry’s Gasyard Feile 2007 prior to winning RTE 2FM’s School of Rock 2008, an all-Ireland competition.
Their latest single ‘Look Around’ is currently being featured in the Northern Irish Tourist Board’s summer 2011 campaign.
