Members of the Derry PCSP held a Special Meeting on Friday afternoon to discuss the threat against Derry City Council Community Safety Warden Scheme staff.

Members expressed their revulsion at the recent threats issued against the wardens and pledged to do all they can to rally community and public support. They called for the immediate removal of the threat and spoke of the impact the threat has had on community warden scheme staff and their families.

The members also spoke of the impact of the temporary suspension of the Community Warden Scheme on the wider local community.

Alderman Drew Thompson, chairman of the PCSP, said there are many elderly and vulnerable people across urban and rural areas of the community who will have no community warden service this weekend. He said this threat is an attack on the whole community and preventing ordinary people from availing of the excellent service the wardens provide.

He added that the Community Safety Warden Scheme was a much valued and needed service in communities across the Council area and everything must be done to have the threat lifted so this service can be reinstated as a matter of urgency.
