Sadie Callan was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014 and since then she has set herself an annual challenge to raise as much money as possible for the charity.

She has raised a total of £25,000, having raised over £5,200 this year for the charity despite the difficult challenges of Covid-19.

Sadie works at The House in the Wells, accommodation for homeless men with addiction issues, and she said that the residents have been part of a huge community of support spurring her into action every year.

“When I first started to raise money for Macmillan, I chose the charity because I know the work that they do to support people in the city and all over NI. It wasn’t until I had a personal experience of cancer that I realised just how important help from charities like Macmillan can be.

“I’ve sold raffle tickets, done supermarket bag packing - anything that I could think of to encourage people to give and since then I’ve had so much support.

“This year, I didn’t think that I’d be able to fundraise in the same way because of the pandemic. It has been such a difficult few months for everyone, and yet people’s generosity knows no bounds.”

She added: “It’s staggering just how kind people continue to be especially at times like these.”

Tania Bailie, Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan in NI, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to Sadie for everything that she has done and continues to do to support Macmillan – £25,000 is an incredible total and I know that she plans to continue with her fundraising activities in the years to come. It’s no exaggeration to say Macmillan and people with cancer have never needed the public’s help more than we do right now.”
