Pink Ladies: Long list of legends for charity football match

A long list of high profile former Derry City and Glentoran players have signed up to appear at the Brandywell tomorrow (Saturday) to play a game in aid of one of Derry's well known charities.

The Derry City Legends v Glentoran Legends kick-off at 1.30 pm and all proceeds will go to the Pink Ladies Cancer Support Group.

And to give the event a special impetus Derry City F.C. have put on sale a specially designed pink training top for women.

Orlaith Meenan who is the Commercial Marketing Officer for Derry City F.C. said: “We have just received this new top and this is the first time we have strayed away from the traditional red and white home colours of Derry City.

“Fifty per cent of the profits from this top will go to the Pink Ladies. We have selected this charity because it is a great organisation and it does is amazing,” she added.

Those wishing to purchase the top can do so at the Derry City Club Shop which is based in the Brandywell and the shop is open from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The jerseys can also be ordered online at www.derrycityfc.net

Orla continued: “I think it will get women more involved with the club and it’s another indication of how Derry City remains at the heart of the community. The pink top is going to be a symbol of how we link up with the community as well.”

Former Derry City striker, Liam Coyle, explained the thinking behind why the Derry City Legends have chosen the Pink Ladies as their designated charity game this year.

He said: “Our thinking on it is that we started Derry City Legends about eight years ago and our first chosen charity was the Pink Ladies and that match was also against Glentoran at the Brandywell.

“In the meantime we have chosen different charities and the significance of the Brandywell being redeveloped means that this is possibly the last game that will ever be played on the grass pitch. So we decided to repeat that game at the Brandywell this Saturday.”

Names already signed up include those who played for Derry City down the decades such as Jobby Crossan, Tony O’Doherty, Felix Healy, Jack Keay, Stuart Gauld, Eamon Doherty, Gary Beckett and Ray McGuinness .

Glentoran have also pledged a long list of legends such as Jim Cleary, Barney Bowers, Johnny Jameson and Justin McBride.
