East Eden Limited, who owns Owenmor Nursing Home, formerly Avondale, on Derry’s Culmore Road, has been granted planning permission to extend the facility by 33 beds.
In a planning review, which re-visited the initial planning application, a full appeal was granted.
The initial planning application had been turned down in October 2014 in relation to parking provision and traffic access.
On the site there is currently 47 beds based on ground floor accommodation; but under the new planning permission it will be extended to 80 beds, with an additional 33 bedded two-storey extension added.
East Eden Company Director Dr Brendan McDonald confirmed the news, “The extension brings the capacity of the facility to 80 beds and will be in keeping with the aesthetics of the renovated and extended building.
“This approval and anticipated build will retain the same standards and commitment to caring for the elderly which pertain at our existing facilities, both at Owenmor and our other two properties in Omagh.
“We are currently liaising with Stirling University on all standards relating to the ‘Stirling University Gold Standard Dementia Environment Award’.”
Work will commence on the extension late in 2015 and completion is anticipated for mid-2016.
