Plans for new city mortuary
Plans have been submitted for a new mortuary at Derry’s Altnagelvin Hospital - a move that will enable work to get underway at the new multimillion pound radiotherapy centre.
A proposal for the new mortuary has been lodged with planners and advertised in the local press. The plans also include provision for the relocation of industrial oxygen tanks and for two additional generators.
A spokeswoman for the Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT) says there will be no disruption to existing services during the construction phase.
“The relocation will take place when the new facilities have been built and established. This is subject to the necessary planning approval,” she says.
The spokeswoman added that the new mortuary and associated work will pave the way for the new £50million radiotherapy centre - due to be completed in late 2015.
“The planning application for a mortuary and plant rooms within the grounds of the Altnagelvin Hospital site is part of site enabling works for the planned development of the new radiotherapy unit at the hospital. This unit will have an immense impact on the patient experience,” she says.
