New signposts to mark Derry’s status as City of Culture in 2013 were erected at the main approach roads to the city yesterday.
And last night a landmark billboard-mural was being installed at Ebrington, facing towards the river, which will be visible from the Guildhall and the new Peace Bridge.
It is intended to have this mural ready for Saturday’s bridge opening. The signs, all of which were manufactured and put up by a Derry company, are emblazoned with the Awen logo and the ‘2013’ date.
Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive of Culture Company 2013 which commissioned the signs, said: “The signs feature a very simple and elegant design which people across the city will immediately recognise – and which we hope visitors from all across the world will come to know as well.
“We think the Awen is the ideal symbol for our year. It’s an ancient Celtic symbol, which advises that by using festivals to mark the seasons, people can best attune to their flows. The Awen also symbolises inspiration, spirituality and creativity. It couldn’t be more suitable for what we are planning.”
