Police came under attack from youths throwing bottles and other missiles in the Altcar Park area of Galliagh on Monday

It is believed the riot happened shortly before 6:00p.m. No officers were injured.

Chief Inspector Alan Hutton, the Operations Manager for Derry City and Strabane, said this type of attack was putting the safety of police officers and members of the public at risk.

“Police had been in the area carrying out a search operation. No officers were injured.

“Unfortunately, this was not the only incident of its kind on Monday night. Elsewhere, stones were thrown at passing vehicles at Madams Bank Road and we have a report of at least one car having been struck.

“These attacks pose a risk of injury to motorists; with the possible dangers to other people should a driver lose control.”

Chief Inspector Hutton urged anyone with influence in the local community to try and put a stop to such incidents happening in the future.

“I would ask those with influence in the community to use it to bring incidents like these to an end.

“Those who engage in such incidents should also consider the impact on the community and the adverse effect that a conviction could have on their lives in the long term,” he said.
