Police in Derry are hunting a sex attacker after a young woman was sexually assaulted in Templegrove during the early hours of Saturday morning.
The PSNI described the incident as a “serious sexual assault” and issued a description of the man who they believe to have carried out the attack.
The Journal understands that the victim is 18 years-old and that the attack took place on a footpath, metres away from several houses.
“It is believed that at approximately 3.15am, a young woman was assaulted by an unknown male, described as being of medium build, approximately 6’0” tall, with long hair down to his chin and stubble. He had a local accent and was wearing a dark trench coat and lace-up boots,” said a PSNI spokesperson.
Local Sinn Fein Councillor Maeve McLaughlin said that she was appalled by the attack and urged anyone with information to contact the police immediately.
“It’s extremely alarming when you hear of such an attack taking place in our city,” said Colr. McLaughlin.
“I hope that the girl in question is getting all of the help and support that she needs.
“The description of the attacker is quite detailed. Hopefully someone’s memory will be jogged and we will be able to take this person off our streets.”
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Detectives in the PSNI’s Rape Crime Unit on 0845 600 8000. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.
