Police were last night continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding an arson attack on the main Sinn Fein offices at Rathmór in Creggan.
It’s understood a rear window was broken and a flammable liquid poured into the office shortly before midnight on Sunday.
Speaking after the constituency office was targeted in the attack, Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney said;
“This must be condemned as an attempt to attack the democratic process. It will not stop us working or the people of Derry. It will be business as usual for Derry Sinn Féin, continuing to serve the people of the city an the wider north west.”
Meanwhile it’s emerged that a book of remembrance honouring Derry republicans which was being held in a room next to the office which was targeted was not damaged in the fire.
The Foyle MLA added: “I want to reassure people that the room which houses the Book of
Remembrance to the many people who contributed to the republican struggle in every decade since the twenties did not suffer any damage.
“It says much for the mentality and motivation of the criminals who carried out this attack that they would attempt to destroy a Centre that contains so many pieces of remembrance dedicated to those who gave of themselves selflessly.”
