New SDLP councillor for Nortland John Boyle may be a new face in the council chamber but he has insisted that he brings a wealth of experience with him.
He was elected on the second count of votes in the Northland electoral area after receiving 1,097 first preference votes. Transfers from party colleague, John Tierney, who was elected on the first count, helped him over the quota, which was set at 1,158.
He said he is looking forward to the challenge of serving and council and said job creation would be his main priority. “It is going to be a challenge for everyone. Top of my agenda will be the chronic unemployment among our young people. This city deserves the same as Belfast and when I look at the Belfast skyline I see it dotted with cranes; ours is not,” he said.
He also said the SDLP is returning to Council with a strong team. “I am confident that there will be strong representation from the SDLP and we will work to end infighting and ensure that equal terms for everyone in Foyle.”
