SDLP MLA Colum Eastwood has commended Derry City Council on its commitment to redevelop the Brandywell stadium.
“Derry City Council has shown great leadership in committing £4.9m to redevelop the Brandywell Stadium to ensure that its overall plan to transform sporting facilities in the area can proceed in a way that offers best value for money.
“The stadium refurbishment announcement is great news for this city, both socially and economically. It has been a long time coming and in order for the project to proceed it is now vital that there is no further delay in the delivery of the money pledged by DCAL and OFMDFM for the Brandywell and Daisyfield development scheme part of the Foyle Gateway project as official letters of offer are still pending.
“This large scale scheme will breathe new life into what has been one of the most deprived areas on this island. The investment of a total of £8.8 million will go some way to helping to offset decades of economic neglect which has fueled poverty, social exclusion and inequality in the area.”
