Sinn Féin councillor Colly Kelly has welcomed a new move to help thousands of ‘undocumented’ Irish people in the US.
Colr. Kelly said Assembly support for a motion supporting reform of the US immigration system would help young people who have emigrated from Derry and Donegal. The Assembly speaker, William Hay, will now write to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, John Boehner, asking for reform.
Colr. Kelly said: “I have noticed the amount of young people calling to our office to get passports forms signed. In most conversations the talk is of emigration to America and Australia. My party colleague Jack Murray would have a similar experience in Donegal. At least 70,000 Irish citizens are currently ‘undocumented’ in the US but play a very important role in economic, social and cultural life there.”
