SDLP Foyle Assembly candidate, Mark H Durkan, is pledging to fight for the rights of taxi drivers should he be elected to the Assembly in May.
He said: “The taxi industry is possibly the largest employer in Derry and the DOE should implement measures to protect the rights of taxi drivers. With the recent surges in fuel prices times have become even tougher for drivers as fares are kept low by firms to compete with each other. With spiralling fuel costs, office and radio rents and huge insurance premiums, drivers are finding it difficult to make ends meet- and are having to work unhealthily long hour. Greater regulation of the industry is needed be it in terms of pricing, capping driver numbers or the establishment of a forum for drivers.”
