Disability campaigners have today thanked SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan for becoming the first MP in Northern Ireland to support Mencap’s new ‘Hear my voice’ campaign.
In the run up to next year’s General Election, the ‘Hear my voice’ campaign is all about giving people with a learning disability and their families the chance to speak to their political representatives in order to make sure they are truly heard.
Mencap are mobilising the learning disability community to share their stories and ask their local candidates to listen.
Mr Durkan said: “I am listening because knowing that you have a disability does not mean that I know you, your needs or feelings. I can only know or understand your views, issues and ideas by listening to you.”
Mencap UK tweeted: “Thank you Mark for supporting #HearMyVoice.”
Disability campaigners tweeted: “Woohoo the first Northern Irish MP @markdurkan has signed up to the Hear My Voice campaign.”
