The SDLP is to meet later this week to select a replacement for veteran former Shantallow councillor Shaun Gallagher.
Colr. Gallagher, a former mayor of Derry, stood down from Derry City Council last month.
He had represented the Shantallow area of the city for 25 years and served as mayor in 2003-2004.
His decision to stand down as a councillor was made at the monthly meeting of Derry City Council in December following an SDLP selection convention to chose the party’s candidates for the forthcoming local government elections, which will be held in May.
It is believed party members will meet on Thursday evening to select a replacement to be co-opted onto the Council to fill the vacancy left by Mr Gallagher’s resignation.
Front-runners for co-option are likely to be Colm O’Connor and Brian Tierney, both of whom have been selected to contest the upcoming election in the Ballyarnett area, which will replace the existing Shantallow electoral area as part of the Review of Public Administration.
Colm O’Connor is a student at Queen’s University, Belfast and has been involved with the SDLP Youth in Derry for a number of years.
Brian Tierney is the nephew of former SDLP councillor and John Tierney.
