SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has welcomed the news that death threats from dissident republicans against Derry City Council community safety wardens have now been lifted.

Mr Durkan said: “The public support for the wardens shows that their work is valued and wanted – whereas those who have made these threats are not wanted.

“I want to commend the good work of the Trade Union movement in asserting the rights of staff who are serving real needs in the community.

“I hope that the city’s community safety wardens and their families can take full relief from the fact that this misdirected and unwarranted threat has now been lifted.

“I also hope that they can take every encouragement from the strong public support and appreciation which has been expressed by people throughout this city for their good work.”
