SDLP Councillor Martin Reilly will become the next Mayor of Derry following a party selection convention in the City Hotel last night.
Councillor Reilly, who will take up his new role next month, said: “I’m delighted to have been selected by the SDLP to be our party’s nominee for Mayor of Derry for the 2013-2014 term. I am humbled by the support I received from party members and I am also honoured to be chosen to represent this city and district as First Citizen.
“It was the SDLP that first brought me to Derry in 2001, canvassing for John Hume and then working as an Assembly Assistant to Mark Durkan and John Tierney. The warmth of the welcome of the people of this city is known throughout the world and, as Mayor, I will be able to testify to this ‘legenderry’ welcome as I have experienced it first–hand myself.
“I wish the current Mayor Councillor Kevin Campbell well in his last month in office and I will endeavour to work positively with all sections of this community to ensure that the doors of the new Guildhall are open to all citizens.”
Martin is married to Bronagh, and is originally from Roslea in County Fermanagh.
