Sinn Féin Councillor Brenda Chivers has said working class unionists and loyalists can’t depend on the DUP to protect them from Tory welfare cuts.
Cllr. Chivers said; “The DUP have been in charge of the Department of Finance and Personnel since 2011 and since then we have had a year on year reduction on spending.
“These reductions are now having a cumulative effect on public services.
“Now we have the DUP acting as cheerleaders for further cuts which would have a devastating impact on the most vulnerable people in our society.
“Sinn Féin will not accept this attack on the poor.
“There needs to be a united response from all parties opposing these cuts. Otherwise we will simply be implementing cuts at the behest of a cabinet of millionaires and that is something Sinn Féin is not prepared to do.
“The DUP can’t be depended on to defend vulnerable people. They are intent on getting into bed with the Tories in return for power and prestige at the expense of the working class communities they claim to represent.
“They went to meetings and garden parties with the Tories at Downing Street and seemed to be more intent on raising issues around flags and parades rather than health, education and jobs.”
