Sinn Féin hold commemoration in the Benedy

Sinn Féin say they will commemorate the 90th anniversary of the deaths of John J O’Carolan and Denis Kilmartin next Sunday 6th May at 12.30pm.

“The commemoration will be held at the Republican Memorial at the crossroads of the Corrick Road and Killew Road in the Benedy just off the Glenshane Pass,” said a spokesperson. “Cathal Ó hOisín MLA will deliver the main speech.”

Mr. O’hOisin said: “Brian Kilmartin was a veteran of the Tan War. His brother Denis and his uncle John O’ Carolan were executed by the B Specials at the White Mountain just of the Glenshane Pass in 1922. The day after their funerals Brian went to live in Donegal. He did not set foot in Dungiven again until he returned for the official opening of the Sinn Féin Advice Centre by Martin McGuinness MP MLA on 24th May 2001. We named our Advice Centre in honour of Denis and John J. It was a privilege for me to meet Brian on that occasion, accompanied by one of his last surviving comrades Bill McHenry. Sadly both Brian and Bill passed away shortly after the event but they are forever commemorated in the mirror above the reception in our Sinn Féin Advice Centre in Dungiven and cherished in the hearts of every Republican in Doire Thoir and beyond.”
